Kommunistische Partei Deutschland KPD/DKP 2004

Mauerpark: The Development of a Place of Terror to Place of Joy
Living in Berlin, I became fascinated with the park just down the street from where I lived. Now so full of people, seeking refuge from work and school and problems, it had been the death strip between the Eastern and the Western Berlin Wall. I wanted to look at how this place of terror had become this place of joy.
Throughout my year in Berlin, I documented Mauerpark in photographs, and gained a lot of insight simply talking to the people I first met, and then became close friends with in Mauerpark. I interviewed members of my "dog group," who had been coming to the park for years with their dogs. I also conducted a video interview with ex-Stasi officer Hagen Koch, who was very, very helpful in helping me gain insight into the "official" Mauerpark. I had originally planned to subtitle this video interview, but I was able to incorporate the information I learned from him into my photographic report, and so I decided against the very time-consuming and unnecessary editing process. The album I have created contains not only documents, but in my opinion, more importantly, the visual images of the park and especially the people. I used my Monroe money for roundtrip airfare to Germany, to help pay rent and buy food while I was researching instead of working as a job, and to buy video supplies and Hagen Koch's book and CD-Rom. Through this experience, I have gained friends for life. It was through discussing their lives in the East that the first barriers were broken down, and I was able to form very close friendships with the people with whom I spent so much time.
I want to thank Lisa Grimes for all her help in getting forms turned in and mail sent to my grandfather so that I could meet deadlines. And I would like to thank the Charles Center for providing such a wonderful program that allows so many students to experience anything they can imagine.
